Minutes, 00-02-27 Recorded by Tse Wei Lim and Dennis Clark, with addenda Sent to hrsfa-announce, 27 Feb 23:27 ____________________________________________________________________ The meeting opened with a request to cope with business quickly so as to get on to the elections. The Masq happened. Last night in fact. In spite of the Loker people generally sucking, in that they seemed to have forgotten all about us and every other group they'd booked that night (including, above and beyond the groups meeting in the basement of mem hall, what appeared to be an HRO reception taking place in the loker coffeehouse, all of whom were extremely confused to be walking by costumed people singing to make up for a sound system which wouldn't play lyrics), and didn't bring us a fully functional sound system. The technical issues were, thankfully, successfully resolved, and praise to the cops for their unlocking of things and general helpfulness. Thanks to Marshall Perrin and Kevin Gold for organizing, and to Kevin for writing the skit. We appear to have made half of a large wad of money, Marshall getting the rest for the food. SF-25 happened. a flick called "top of the food chain" premiered and was very very good. Buy it when it comes out on video. SIG Reports: Gaming SIG: There was gaming. B5 SIG: Watched lots of B5. Good stuff happened. More Tuesday at 10, following Buffy. Milk & Cookies SIG: will meet this friday. 9 PM-1 AM, Leverett JCR. It will be good. There will be Milk. There will be Cookies. There will be Stories. There may even be Junior Parents. Who knows? Come. Writer's SIG: will meet Monday at 8 in the vicinity of science center 110. There will be much to do, so be there. Comics SIG: is trying to resurrect itself. Email twlim if interested. Kelly Stage was given the difficult task of running elections until the cochair race ended. Elections: cochair: The nominees were Kevin Gold and Bryn Neuenschwander. Following a question and answer session, including the first instances of two questions which would become standard (what are your time committments, are you a senior, writing a thesis? and more importantly how do you pronounce the name of the house Quincy and the town of Quincy) the candidates were both elected. (I can't remember all the pronounciations; only Tom's was after I was elected. If one of the people anxiously transcribing the data would forward it to the list, I'd be thankful). Quotes: "If I did write a thesis, it would be halfhearted and I would still devote most of my time to HRSFA" -- kgold "Don't vote for nobody. That would suck." -- kgold's campaign slogan Winners: kgold and bneuensc Infernal elections began, the candidates being twlim, bmiller, and dclark, but since they seemed to depend on the outcome of treasurer and eic elections, they were postponed. Treasurer- The candidates were gormley and twlim. twlim emerged victorious, after much debate about whether or not he would embezzle from the taiwan association, in which he also holds the treasurer position. Quotes: "I feel old" -- kniedzw (for reference, the score is now undergrads 4, kniedzw -1, cmaster 1) EIC- In what was later declared the most entertaining election in memory, bmiller and starr faced off in a fight to the finish in a long question session. Quotes: "I would not hold it against him." -- starr, on if Riley from Buffy were to submit something to fusion. "It would be messy and it woul destroy the original hard copy." bmiller, on shooting down drafts in big balls of flame. "I like getting other people to do things for me. Mainly, I'm got at getting them not to do things with me." -- bmiller, foot firmly in mouth. "You can forget about tonight." -- starr, the same. Winner: starr Infernal- After the previous elections, only dclark and bmiller remained (twlim having won another office). In spite of apparent apathy, and the candidates voting for each other, dclark was eventually elected. Quotes: "You can lead a horsse to water, but it will take a lot of energy and determination to drown him." -- bmiller Winner: dclark External: The only present (and incumbent) candidate being lotze, this one was pretty clear from the get-go. For the record, tom says the house is quin-SEE, and the town is throatwarbler mangrove. Winner: lotze The meeting then adjourned to Pizzaria Uno's for post-election partying. ____________________________________________________________________ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 01:10:23 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron J Dinkin cc: hrsfa-announce@hcs.harvard.edu Subject: Re: [HRSFA-Ann.] Minutes 2/27 (Elections Meeting) On Sun, 27 Feb 2000, Dennis Bartholomew Flaherty Clark wrote: > (I can't remember all the pronounciations; only Tom's was after I was > elected. My notes claim that every candidate said ['kwIntsij] except Starr and Rory, who seem to have said ['kwInsij]. For contrast, I would have said ['kwInzij]. -Aaron J. For contrast, I would have said > ['kwInzij]. I can't read linguistic notation, but. Experience at Harvard says the house is pronounces "kwin-see", and people who grew up there say that the town is pronounced "kwin-zee". In both cases, first syllable is accented. -- Susan www.thirteen.net/~susan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i would have killed myself by now without vim. --"shifty"
