Minutes, 27 October 1996 Recorded by Susan Marie Groppi, mailed to hrsfa-announce 28 October --------------------------------------------------- HRSFA Minutes, 27 October A very small meeting is called to order. Shane wants to be reimbursed approximately $50 for shipping costs of the Really Big ID4 Display. Why do we want it? 'Cause it's cool. What will we do with it? Absolutely nothing. Where will we put it? The Goddess only knows. "It's really cool, but the practical value is nil . . . and besides, we hate being poor." --Chris Hall, HRSFA Treasurer and Shane's roommate. Kyle has agreed to pay Shane if we don't agree to it. A motion is made to split the costs with Kyle. David Krinsky comments: "We get the cutout, you get the mineral rights." A vote to entirely reimburse Shane: Shane's the only one who votes in favor. A vote to have Kyle pay Shane and then trade Kyle a lifetime membership for ownership of the cutout is passed resoundingly. "We forced membership on Terry Pratchett, we can force it on Kyle." --Claudia (I think). Alan Sundell has offered to give us a 486 PC clone with temporary (indefinite?) loan of monitor, in return for a lifetime membership. The meeting votes unanimously to accept his offer. Lifetime memberships are discussed. The history of the price scheme: John Abbe was the first lifetime member; he donated $100 to HRSFA and asked for a lifetime membership in return. The concept caught on, and the price for students was lowered to $50 to accommodate student budgets. But does "student" mean "undergrad" or just "Harvard student"? What about affiliates (staff, etc)? Are alums subject to student rate or non-student rate? Since this discussion/vote wasn't announced in advance, it's tabled until the next meeting. The meeting announcement will contain a listing of the options for people who wish to register proxy votes on this issue. Moiraine inquires what the benefits of permanent membership are. Aside from the intangible wonder of being forever a part of HRSFA's history, the benefits are basically the same as regular members (10% discount at Pandemonium and Your Move Games, library priviliges, virgin sacrifice, etc.) but forever. Moiraine feels that permanent members should have copies of Fusion mailed to them. The issue is tabled along with the rest of it. Library update: we're almost done cataloging. People who wrote to me about office hours will be contacted shortly. If you didn't write to me but are interested in doing office hours, please contact me (groppi@hcs) immediately. The library should be re-opening within the week. Event reports: The Wyld Hunt was EXCELLENT. Warm, no rain, no wind. There was a sacred barbecue afterwards. Marshall was the stag. It was a Hunt. Y'know. The Cult of Chronos met, the Hour came. It was a small but spirited gathering that managed to avoid the attention of the Harvard police while still attracting passerby. "Kyle, are you sleeping okay?" --ctingley SIG Reports: Eli has an announcement. There will be a Star Trek movie marathon in mid-to-late November, showing movies 2, 3, 4, and 6. A full announcement will be coming soon. In the meantime, Ny Martin (co-organizing with Eli) is going to be baking/cooking Star Trek theme food. A $30 budget is approved for the event, since it's a full-membership thinger and not actually just a SIG event, but it's made very clear that no spending over that $30 will be reimbursed. We all eagerly anticipate the Star Trek debauchery. Moiraine says that the Voyager Tribble special will be airing in a week or two, she suggests a gathering since she knows all sorts of inside jokes and whatnot from when the episode was written. There will be more information on this when they figure out the airdate. Cool Movie PSIG: This Wednesday is John Cusack night. Alexei presents "Tapeheads" and Chase presents "Better Off Dead" and they both claim theirs is better. It'll start around 8. Announcement will follow. Gaming: "In all games, everyone's equally hosed, because that's how it's supposed to be." --Aaron Landry The Arisia preregistration deadline is coming up soon. Contact Claudia (cmarie@max.tiac.net) for information on registration or helping with the event itself. Bizarreness SIG: Depending on Matt Ender's red paper heart production capabilities, either Snugglebunny Ringwraiths or an Eye of Argon reading contest will be after the next meeting. B5: Still temporarily homeless for Sunday nights, but there's a Monday night home where we can watch tapes. I think we really really want somewhere to watch next week's episode when it airs. Magic: Met, will meet again. Something about buying cards so we can have sealed-deck tournaments. My notes are very sketchy here, I think there were multiple conversations going on and I couldn't hear. My bad, bad secretary. Sorry. The Real Issue of the Evening: What Movie Do We Show? Our movie slot is the first weekend in December. Aaron reads us the list of recent release movies we can get. We add older choices as well, since an old favorite is approximately the same risk as a new movie we're not sure of. A lot of discussion and voting ensued. If there's a demand, I'll post a more detailed version of it. The upshot is, we selected five movies in rank order. Aaron will take this list and get us a movie to show. We gave him five because it's uncertain that we can get the first choice, or whatever. But we'll probably be able to get our first choice. The Five Choices, in order. 1. The Neverending Story 2. Nightmare Before Christmas 3. Mighty Aphrodite 4. History of the World Part I 5. Interview With a Vampire Meeting was hastily adjourned. -- Susan ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "The body is a dance.
