Minutes, 13 April 1997 Recorded by Eli Bohmer Lebow, mailed to hrsfa-announce 14 April --------------------------------------------------- Minutes, HRSFA general meeting 1997-04-13 19:10; Julian Day 2450552.5 Sever 110 Recorded by Eli Bohmer Lebow Going of the Hour: Was cool. Five and a half people showed up. (That is, one person showed up briefly and left. That he left is Igor's fault.) Then they noticed a few people with shiny yellow tape armbands. Hmm. They went to light the fire anyway. These armband people then announced themselves as the TSSO, Time Security Special Operations (or possible Timestream something), and put out the fire with waterguns. They are from MIT. We invited them to partake in the ice cream. (Notes: 1. They observed us last spring, which is why they thought they needed so many waterguns. 2. I did not go to this event, I am reporting it secondhand, and I apologize for the errors I have undoubtedly introduced.) Apocrypha HRSFAlogicae is on the web. (It is at http://hcs.harvard.edu/~hrsfa/apoc/ .) Kyle will write the five-year update this summer. Mike Jittlov came and spoke and showed his movie, plus some other clips, at the Science Center on Friday. He did not come to the HRSFA meeting. We gave him a Certificate of Hoopiness from the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Association; we will mail him a version which corrects this typo. [See in SIG reports for one more note about him.] We voted that Kyle needs more sleep. The Spring Party was good, though only about 15 people showed up. People v. Larry Flynt: We will be showing this movie on May 9 and 10 (that's 1997-05-09 and 1997-05-10) at 7:30 pm and 10:00 pm (19:30 and 22:00) in Science Center B. Poster poster poster! Please poster! [See below for more details on the grand subject of Postering. Previous HRSFA movies have been somewhat ill-postered and we must compensate.] Booksale: We will sell excess copies of certain books; there is a movement afoot to keep all our copies of Lord Foul's Bane. Alan Sundell's computer: We have not received it yet. (He donated it in exchange for a lifetime membership.) Bookshelves: Dave Krinsky and Marshall Perrin are going to make bookshelves for the library. I gather they haven't got the wood yet. (They're getting it from wood that plays don't need or no longer need it for props I gather.) Library cataloguing is almost complete. The two boxes in Kyle's room still need catalogued. Fusion posters, and also more about Larry Flynt posters: Put them up. Kelly's Fusion posters should be put up this week, since she needs submissions before May. (I think this is the timeframe given, but i'm not sure.) It is also said that posters are taken down Monday and Thursday. Larry Flynt, on the other hand, would ideally be put up next week, though that's not as important as: Poster! Poster poster poster! It was decreed that everyone wants to poster, and I think I can safely say that this means YOU, my dear reader; please poster. (It was not clear to me whether the Official Declaration encompassed just the people at the meeting, but I think I can round up support for it to mean everyone affiliated with HRSFA.) Also note: we'd like to poster Harkness Commons, at the law school; it is said to be an effective place to poster. We voted to approve the money Kelly (about $20) and Chris (about $10) spent on posters. We will give Dean Epps a box of Fusions. Ig Nobel Awards: We may be the "prime sponsors" of the Igs next year. We will have an Ig SIG to coordinate stuff. Aaron is the Ig SIG leader. Kyle will send Aaron all the information he has about the Igs. Anne McCaffrey will talk at a reunion; Aaron will try to get her to talk to us. Radcliffe wants a list of speaker suggestions. Not necessarily alumnae, preferably women. [I recall we provided them with suggestions in the past.] [Nothing was said about who in HRSFA may be collecting suggestions. I hereby volunteer to collect them until I figure out who's in the know about this.] Prefrosh weekend is the 19th (this upcoming weekend, as I write). Contact a co-chair (groppi@hcs, kniedzw@fas) if you want to table. Note that there are not enough hosts for the prefrosh, and the people in charge of prefrosh weekend want us to encourage our members to host prefrosh. Host prefrosh. Thank you. We are working on multiple Arisia grants. One is for Fusion. Another involves the Thousand Book Donation. (Mr. Ciaraldi will donate them to Arisia, and Arisia will donate them to us.) Myld Hunt: Chris is still looking for a fox and a co-huntsmaster. I think you can still email him (crhall@fas) to volunteer for these positions; he will email those who volunteer shortly. Game-a-thon: The GAT will be May 3. (Idea for next year: Hold it during pre-frosh weekend.) (The GAT was once held to raise money, sort of like other -a-thons.) In charge of the GAT is, of course, Aaron. Igor, Chris, Aaron, Kyle, and Moses are said to be going to run games. (Not intended to be an exclusive list.) Fusion again: Kelly summarized our current status, utilizing visual aids to make her point. This is a magazine: --------------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | --------------------- This is what we have: So, please submit. There is a box for submissions in the Woodberry poetry room, on the fifth floor of Lamont (as all the good little boys and girls who took posters know). The magazine will be mostly fiction; there may also be book reviews and interviews. (Names of potential interviewees were mentioned, but I didn't catch them. Sorry.) We also need art. (Kelly will speak to Jed Wahl.) Kyle referred to Folk and Myth as "the thing you [Aaron] used to be", causing Claudia to comment on the drastic decline of this concentration among HRSFAns. Possible dates for the Senior Brunch are May 4, 11, 18. Seniors are requested to please figure out which of these are bad for you. (Several of them are the same weekend as various other things, such as the movie, Arts First weekend, the Myld Hunt, GAT; the list was too complicated for me to understand.) At our next meeting we will choose one of these dates. S I G R E P O R T S Getting Celebrities to Meetings SIG: failed to get Mike Jittlov to the meeting, but he may still be in town at the time of the next meeting, so we shall see what happens. Magic: The sealed deck league met. You can still join. They are playing for bragging rights. Writers' SIG: met for the first time, with low attendance. It will meet again soon; an announcement is said to be forthcoming. Gaming SIG: Kyle and Eliot are not running their game(s). In the Vampire game, the characters are hosing themselves. Mage will meet next week. In Lords of Order (aka Talismans of Power), something happened but I didn't hear what. Ravenloft is meeting this Wednesday. In Lords of Chaos, Armageddon has begun. Babylon 5: There will be a new episode two weeks from what was called "tonight". I think this means there will be a new episode 1997-04-27, April 27, the next HRSFA meeting. It is still unknown (even to JMS) whether there will be a fifth season; he is planning for both possibilities. Robert Jordan SIG: Aaron met. "I had fun reading by myself", he said. The meeting concluded with the traditional demand that Carthage be destroyed. (See the Apocrypha HRSFAlogicae for details.) The meeting adjourned to Munchies SIG at 19:54.
