Minutes 1997-09-28 Recorded by Eli Bohmer Lebow Sent to hrsfa-announce Sun, 5 Oct 1997 13:37 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Minutes, HRSFA general meeting 1997-09-28 19:08; Julian day 2450720.5 Sever 110 Recorded by Eli Bohmer Lebow We need to plan the Wyld Hunt. The relevant full moon is Thursday 1997-10-16. Do we want the Hunt to be that day, or the weekend after (the weekend of 1997-10-18, which is the head of the Charles), or the weekend before (1997-10-11, which is Yom Kippur), or a later weekend (1997-10-25, which is the Coming of the Hour (or possibly the Going, I'm not sure, but Kyle said it was the Coming)), or a still later weekend (1997-11-01, which is Freshman Parents' Weekend)? We voted for 1997-10-25, barring any SCA conflict. (For those of you who are new to this mailing list, the SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism, and we're not sure if they have an event that night.) We appoint --*AARON LANDRY*-- as Huntsmaster and --*CHRIS HALL*-- as Co-Huntsmaster and --*MATT WITHERS*-- as the Stag. The decision of whether to charge runners $1 or so for the blue paint was postponed till next week, as was the question of whether this is a Donation or a Fee, and whether there is a discount for HRSFA members. The post-hunt fireplace may be that of --*RACHEL KADEL*-- tho i don't think a firm decision was reached. --*RACHEL*-- (alright, alright, i'll stop with the --*'s) will also run the Coming (?) of the Hour, and she'll co-run it with an as-yet-unnamed person who will be her successor, as Rachel is a senior. There will be a party for HRSFA's 10th anniversary, which is the 10th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which is in November as best we can tell. The party is scheduled for the weekend before Thanksgiving, which i have in my notes as Saturday 1997-11-22. I have a history of making mistakes about days of the week and such in my announcements, tho, so don't believe me when i claim that that's the weekend before Thanksgiving, or even that that's a weekend. There may be a Suggested Donation for alums attending this event. Matt Duhan will send out invitations, i.e. he will be our Alumni Addresser. What time should HRSFA meetings be held? Unsurprisingly, everyone present finds Sunday at 7 pm to be a time that they can make. Since this is so unsurprising, we decide to conduct an informal vote over email. Kyle will soon send out an announcement saying you should send your votes to him. We decided not to try to meet different days in different weeks, so the options to vote on are: 1. Wednesdays at 7 post meridien 2. Wed 8pm 3. Sun 6pm 4. Sun 7pm 5. "The above are all bad, you pain-in-the-asses" Anyway Kyle will have sufficient details in his announcement. The next meeting will be Sunday 7pm again, tho, since we haven't decided on what time to meet. Several officers' emergency decisions needed approval. First, the officers decided to spend $30 on food for the party. This was approved. Second, there's: The Movie. The issues: Swank hates us. They sent the bill to Chris this summer but he wasn't here, so they Chris didn't send them the money until he got back. It's Igor's fault. (We'll have $700 in the bank after the check clears.) Collegiate Advantage or HCS or some other group of financially unwise persons may offer to pay for most of the movie if we do the work. This possibility was classified as one of "semi-divine intervention". FUSION needs money, and is something we would want to spend money on if we had it. I don't remember if this was an argument for or against the movie, just that having money is a good thing. We have much cooler movies this year than we did last year, so last year's flops may not mean much. But the movies are more expensive this year. (I think we have the potential of going in the red if the movie is a flop.) We vote to reject wholeheartedly the idea of sole sponsorship of a movie, and to approve the idea of co-sponsorship with semi-divine financially ignorant beings. We had about six days to decide (I think because of paying to have a Science Center room to show it in) as of the meeting. [As of the officers' meeting Friday morning there were no semi-divine offers, so i guess there'll be no movie this semester.] For the Ig Nobel awards, Aaron read out the list of chosen delegates faster than i could write them down. I believe he's emailed this list, tho. Posters for Ig publicity are on Aaron's door, in case you want to help poster for the Igs, and I'll preempt Aaron here by informing you that yes, you do want to help poster for the Igs. --*SIG*-- --*REPORTS*-- Star Trek: Saw last season's finale for DS9, will see this season's premiere. Email Ny if you want to attend. [I think this last part is moot now. Sorry.] Cool Movie PSIG: Saw TRON and Drunken Master II, will see City of Lost Children. Anime SIG, aka Matt Duhan: Owns some new movies. Aaron is taping stuff for the Anime Society, so we may be able to come to a little understanding there (cough). BBC SIG doesn't exist unless you email Claudia to tell her you want to be a member. B5: I think it was said that new episodes will start the weekend of October 12. We will watch these episodes. FUSION's box is still in Lamont, so you can drop off submissions there. (Woodberry poetry room, fifth floor.) X-files' season premiere is 1997-11-02. It was declared that the reviver of this SIG (Ileana Ciobanu) would come to the next meeting of HRSFA. UC Harassment SIG went well. They seem to be meeting in Sever on a regular basis. Matt Duhan is starting a potential new SIG, since he now gets Media 1 and the Sci-fi channel and old SF movies. MIT Expeditions: Very few HRSFAns went to see Frederik Pohl talk. The rest are described as having missed him, to their own detriement. He'll talk again--come! The Siswai'aman: Lords of Chaos met for four and a half hours on the day of the meeting. Freshman should resist Aaron's plans. Igor didn't sing a song at the meeting. Matt & Lisa came in LARP robes, since they were LARPing. (Live-action role-playing.) There is a LARP with a name like Tobby Laraza but i'm having trouble deciphering my own handwriting. Intercon XIII will have many LARPs. Talismans of Power has 8 to 11 players and is great. Ravenloft should meet soon. Alumni Roborally is good. You don't have to be an alum to play. Vampire: We're hosed. (At least someone is. I thought i was going to have to type up minutes without a single game claiming to be hosed.) Shadowrun: Kyle is vague. Finally, congratulations to the new fish joining the HRSFA mascots in Susan's room. There is a motion to remove the fish, but i don't think we got around to voting on it. We adjourned at 20:09.
