Minutes, 99-03-21 Recorded by Bryn Neuenschwander Sent to hrsfa-announce, 22 Mar 01:47 ___________________________________________________________________ The meeting was opened under martial law, which was then abolished five seconds later. FUSION The deadline for submissions for our upcoming issue is this Friday, March 26th. Talk to Kelly if you have work you haven't given her, even if you're not sure you can make the deadline. Artwork in particular is very much needed. Please poster as well. SPRINGFEST May 1st. We may run a living chess match; we can get the space, if only for a while. E-mail if you are interested in participating. Something else is needed for the remainder of the day; we will have a table, the question is what to do with it. Take people's photos with the cardboard Darth Vader? Have games running? Live-action Kill Dr. Lucky? E-mail or with ideas. PREFROSH WEEKEND April 24th-26th. The current idea is for a modified session of Milk and Cookies SIG, possibly with stories from Writers' SIG, also possibly featuring a reading of The Eye of Argon. It will probably be in the Leverett JCR. Email with questions or suggestions. We might wish to schedule something else as well, but the chickwich barbeque seems to have been put aside as something for a later date. We will table in the Activities Fair as well. GATS There will be a miniGAT in early April, and a full-size GAT during reading period. GOING OF THE HOUR Falls on the early morning of April 4th, Easter weekend, at the end of spring break. Turnout will therefore be fairly small, barring massive contingents from MIT who do not have spring break that week. It will, however, continue as Chronos has decreed. MYLD HUNT Will happen in May some time. Kevin Gold has volunteered as the fox, and Tse Wei Lim will be our Huntmaster. SPRING PARTY! Chris Hall, though absent from the meeting, was nominated to host. Email to blackmail him into accepting. Email or if you have a reasonably spacious room and would like to loan it to HRSFA, possibly on April 16th. SPEAKERS Jonathan Young, who apparently worked rather closely with the mythologist Joseph Campbell, and who has a strong interest in the mythological aspects of Star Wars, seems to have stumbled across our webpage. He e-mailed a rather random list of people lifted off various parts of the page and offered to come speak. We will look into this. It will hopefully happen around the end of April. Michael Burstein '91 (we think), a HRSFAlum, will also be coming to speak, possibly at our April 18th meeting, the first after spring break. He recently won the John Campbell Award, and has for two years running been nominated for both the Hugo and the Nebula. He may make an appearance at Writers' SIG. He will also probably be interviewed for a future issue of Fusion. MILITARY WING They awarded a belated decoration to Jenn Doxtader, and futher decorated Tse Wei Lim for his heroic valor in the war. This having been done, they subsequently read the following declaration: "Whereas our officers are known to be hot-headed scoundrels who will stop at nothing to grasp at glory; "Whereas the Military Wing is all too eager to seize power; "Whereas we, the democratic membership of the Harvard-Radcliffe Science Fiction Association (HRSFA) have denounced our recent "war" (declared on the twenty-third day of February in the year of Chronos one thousand nine hundred ninety-nine) as an unwarranted, illicit (and dare we mention, unsuccessful?) action by the officers; "And whereas we, the democratic membership of HRSFA were not consulted either during the officers' "emergency" decision nor under the ensuing martial law, "Therefore be it resolved that while the actions and effects of this "war" are undeniable, nevertheless it represents no part of the foreign policy of the membership as a whole, who embrace all peaceful relations with the Harvard Computer Society; "Also be it resolved that HRSFA is peaceful and innocent, and it was most certainly not the agressor in any recent altercations." THIRD MAILING LIST HCS has offered us a third mailing list, should we choose to accept it. The suggestion was put forth to make this list a bidirectional gateway to a newsgroup dedicated to purely social discourse ("I'm watching Tron tonight, come to *** if you want to join me"). This list would allow HRSFAns without a fas account to read and post to the group, which they otherwise could not do. A Web bulletin board was also suggested, but this would have to wait on Marshall Perrin having free time. Further information on this matter will be posted to -discuss in the near future. It will be dealt with at our next meeting. Email or with questions. SIGS "Going to Movies" SIG went to a movie last week. The trailer was good. And that's all we're saying on the subject. Writers' SIG meets tomorrow in the SC Greenhouse at 8 p.m. Email with submissions. The webpage will be updated, perhaps tonight, hopefully more than an hour before the meeting. Gaming SIG takes partial credit for the war. There was a pickup miniGAT last weekend in honor of visiting alumns; many games were played, including an 8-hour Age of Renaissance game. Matt Ender seems to think he is invincible in this particular game and is open to challengers. There was also spontaneous gaming after Milk and Cookies SIG Friday. TFOS: they apparently weren't thorough enough last time, and now the last ten years are all screwed up, they're hosed, etc. It is still open to players; email Matt Duhan . Dusty Old Books: most of the characters have been subpoenaed by a grand jury. They have been talking to Skippy the Wonder Planet? That's what it sounded like, anyway. Shadowrun: Tse Wei Lim reported in Chris Hall's absence. Apparently somebody voluntarily fucked with a dragon, and was voluntarily roasted not long afterward. Aaron Landry cursed Igor for roping him into GMing for high school kids again. A microGAT was announced for after the meeting. The newly-formed Buffy SIG met last week. A request has been made for tapes of the episodes, for those who cannot make the actual show time. Alumni SIG had visitors: Kevin Martin (Wank Emeritus), Rose Horn, and one other whose name I apologize for not catching. Dean Chung will be coming some time soon. And Burstein, of course, to speak to HRSFA. Meeting adjourned then for gaming or the Oscars, according to people's respective tastes.
